ONE out of THREE.
That's just about the cesarean rate in Indiana
and the United States as a whole right now.
Why would birth doulas not be supporting these new parents as well?
For a long time, doula support was seen as a home birth "thing" or a hippy thing.
That truth can be seen in the questions and comments we receive about the fact that we provide support through any and all cesareans:
"Wait... doulas go to cesareans?"
"You wouldn't just leave me?"
"I'm having a cesarean, what would you even do?"
"This isn't a doula birth."
"Cesareans are easy, why would anyone need support?"
Whether it is an emergency or elective;
We will always be by your side to support you in any capacity you'd like.
Because cesareans aren't "easy" and they are "doula births" and
WE DO SUPPORT ALL OF YOUR DECISIONS!
So, what does professional support
look like through a cesarean?
It looks just about the same as it does for a vaginal birth:
-We are available 24/7 for text/email/ phone support;
whether it is a question, fear,
or you just need someone to talk to about setting up the nursery.
-We are there to help you plan and work through all your options.
-We help you create a personalized birth plan.
-We are there to meet you at the hospital, so a familiar supportive face is there.
-We stay with you in triage to support you through any
procedures before the surgery.
-We will stay through your surgery and support you in the OR (if allowed in).
-We will explain what is happening in terms you can understand
and help to support you and your partner through whatever emotions and feelings you may be having during the procedure.
-We will stay with you, while your partner can go with the baby, if needed.
-We will be with you in recovery to help initiate breastfeeding (if you are wanting to) and offer comfort ideas for your recovery to come.
-We will ensure you are in comfortable in your postpartum room and know what to expect in the next few days to come.
-We will meet with you a couple days after birth to talk through your birth and go over any questions about newborn care and recovery you may have.
Support through cesareans is HUGE!
Many times these situations are unexpected and having someone there who knows this too is normal can be a game changer.
There's no question as to whether professional, nonjudgmental doula support through birth can be beneficial; cesareans are no exception.
You deserve to be supported in whatever way you chose to give birth and
through any of the ups and downs during labor.
Are doulas for all 3/3 births?
